The Road – Cormac McCarthy

October 3, 2023 by April Trepagnier Leave a Comment

I originally encountered this work sometime around 2020 as a personal pick. I would come back to it with Dr. Olivia Edenfield, Georgia Southern University, College of Graduate Studies, Fall 2023. These are my scratch notes.

I originally thought I would write my final paper for this class using this text. These were my scratch notes

  • Can the characters of the father and the son be analyzed using the seven deadly and virtues? This is not to say that the father is sinful or evil, but necessary.
  • Monster on page 3
  • points for the paper pg 5
  • Peach on page 8
  • p. 27 – why is this so scary
  • 34 – what is going on here with promises
  • 36 dream of the boy
  • the duality of water – pp pre 38, 38, 53
  • Has anyone determined the travel path
  • 40 morels
  • age of having babies, later in life, interesting
  • earthquake, biblical?
  • 61 macadam
  • 63 rachitic
  • 68 2nd time boy won’t talk. Sketch the times he does this and see if there is a correlation. Additionally, the times dad says wait here, you always say that I know, I am sorry (also pages 76, 70, 93)
  • 77 first time the boy asks “are we the good guys”
  • 83 first mention of carrying the fire
  • 88 study this passage
  • 97 the trees fall again

About April Trepagnier

Catholic, wife, mother, friend, PhD candidate. I study how stories shape belief, the good, the true, and the beautiful. My academic interests range from the sacred to the subversive, often at once. I teach literature and writing with a core belief that it is not opposable thumbs that make humans special, but our ability to tell, share, and feel stories. I have been accused of having a plate the overflows with wonders; I am totally guilty.
